About West Coast Wildlife Centre
The West Coast Wildlife Centre is located in Franz Josef village and is part of the recovery programme for two of the world’s rarest kiwi species: the rowi, which lives in Ōkārito forest north of the village, and the Haast tokoeka. Eggs are collected from the wild, incubated at the centre, and chicks are raised until they are large enough to defend themselves from predators before being returned to the forest.
Visitors walk through an exhibition about kiwis and the threats they face, such as stoats, cats and dogs, and can view the birds in a nocturnal display area where lighting is controlled to suit the birds’ habits. On guided tours it is possible to see the incubation area and the chicks.
The kiwi is a symbol of New Zealand and is rarely seen in the wild because it is nocturnal and shy. The centre is one of the few opportunities to see the West Coast species up close.
