About Shakespeare Cliff
Shakespeare Cliff is a light-coloured rock cliff on the south shore of Mercury Bay, between Flaxmill Bay and Cooks Beach, on the far side of Whitianga harbour. The name comes from the rock’s profile, which when seen from the sea is said to resemble the face of the English playwright.
The top of the cliff is part of a scenic reserve with grass, benches and a viewpoint. From there you can see all of Mercury Bay: Whitianga and Buffalo Beach across the water, the long Cooks Beach to the east and the islands at the bay entrance. It was in this bay that James Cook anchored in November 1769 to observe the transit of Mercury across the Sun.
From the viewpoint a steep path descends to Lonely Bay, a small rocky beach good for swimming when the sea is calm. Another track links the reserve with Flaxmill Bay, near the Ferry Landing wharf.
The reserve has little shade and is often windy on the cliff top; on clear days the sunset over the bay is one of the most sought-after moments.
