About Te Whanganui‑ā‑Hei Marine Reserve

The Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve covers the sea off Hahei and Cathedral Cove, between Cooks Beach and Hahei. Created in 1992, it is an area where fishing and the collection of any living organism are prohibited, which has allowed fish such as snapper, lobsters and other species to return to the reefs.

The coastline is cut by pale cliffs, arches and sea caves, and the sea contains several islands, such as Mahurangi near Hahei. Kayak trips depart from Hahei beach and follow the coast to Cathedral Cove, entering caves when sea conditions allow. There are also fast-boat and glass-bottom boat trips that reach more distant caves and islands.

Snorkelling is done at sheltered sites, from boats or from the beach. The water is clear on calm days, with seaweed, fish and sea urchins on the shallow reefs.

Sea conditions change with the wind, and trips may be cancelled in rough conditions.
