About The Suter
The Suter, also called Te Aratoi o Whakatū, is Nelson’s public art gallery and one of the country’s oldest, founded in 1899. The building is on Bridge Street, beside the Queens Gardens, a Victorian-style garden with a pond and bridges, so you can combine the visit with a walk.
The collection includes painting, drawing and sculpture, with an emphasis on New Zealand art and on artists who lived or worked in the Nelson region, known for its concentration of ceramics, glass and painting studios. The gallery alternates its permanent collection with temporary exhibitions by local and visiting artists.
The building has been renovated and extended and houses exhibition rooms, a small cinema and spaces for activities. It’s a good stop to see Nelson’s artistic side before visiting the studios and shops of artists scattered through the town and along the road to Motueka.
