About Founders Heritage Park

Founders Heritage Park is a historic village created by the Nelson community from 1977 and opened to the public in 1986. The streets recreate the town of earlier times, with original buildings donated and moved into the park and replicas built with local business help.

Each building houses part of the region’s history, maintained by volunteer groups: transport, commerce, trades, school and domestic life. The collections, largely donated by residents, include vehicles, machinery and everyday objects.

A short historic railway, run by the Nelson railway society, operates on certain days. The park also hosts craft and book fairs throughout the year, and some buildings house local producers of breads, sweets and crafts.
