About Centre of New Zealand

The Centre of New Zealand monument sits atop Botanical Hill, a hill on the eastern edge of Nelson’s town centre. Despite the name, it does not mark the geographic centre of the country: the point was chosen in the 19th century as the zero reference for the country’s early geodetic surveys, and the name stuck.

The climb starts at the Botanical Reserve, near the Queens Gardens, along zigzag trails through trees and pasture. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes, with a steady uphill. At the top, the white monument and plaques explain the history of the surveys.

The view is what brings most people: Nelson’s centre, the harbour, the Boulder Bank sandbank that closes the bay, and on clear days the mountains across Tasman Bay toward Abel Tasman National Park. It’s a good spot to understand the region’s geography before you continue your trip.
