About Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson
Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson’s cathedral, sits atop the hill that closes Trafalgar Street, the main street of the centre. There was already an Anglican church on the site in 1851; the current cathedral began construction in 1925 and was only completed in 1965 after interruptions and design changes. It was consecrated in 1972.
The original plan called for blocks of marble from the Pikikiruna range near Tākaka. After the 1929 Murchison earthquake the solution was judged risky and expensive, and the marble was instead ground and mixed into the plaster. The result is a light-coloured building in a modernist neo‑Gothic style, with a square tower and stained glass.
The best-known ascent is via the granite stairway, brought from Tonga Beach in Tasman Bay, which begins at the end of Trafalgar Street. The gardens around the cathedral serve as a viewpoint over the centre and the mountains. The church operates normally, with services; respect service times.
