About Abel Tasman Coast Track
The Abel Tasman Coast Track is one of the Great Walks, the main routes maintained by the Department of Conservation. It runs 60 km along the park’s east and north coast, starting at Mārahau near Kaiteriteri and heading north through coves, forested hills and estuaries.
The route is well marked and, for the most part, not steep, so it can be completed in three to five days, staying in DOC huts and campsites that must be booked. Many people do only a section, combining walking with boats that stop at beaches: between Anchorage and Bark Bay, for example, the track crosses the suspension bridge over the Falls River.
Some sections cross estuaries that can only be traversed at low tide, such as Awaroa, and there are high-tide alternatives at other points. For that reason, the tide table is part of planning. Bicycles are not allowed on the track.

How much time to set aside
Three to five days for the full track; sections of 3 to 6 hours with boat one-way or return.
Best time
October to April, with more boats and long days; from December to February book huts well in advance. Plan estuary crossings using the tide table.
How to get there
