One day for Te Mata Peak and Cape Kidnappers, or for Te Mata Peak and the Havelock North wineries. Many visitors come to Hastings from Napier.
When to go
November to February is best for Cape Kidnappers, when nests are present. February to April is fruit and grape harvest season. Winter is mild, but the gannet colony is closed from July through late October.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
Yes, in practice: Te Mata Peak, Clifton and the wineries are outside the town centre, with limited public transport. The flat cycleways are another good option.
