About Wairau Valley

The Wairau Valley is the plain carved by the Wairau River west of Blenheim, protected to the north by the Richmond Ranges and to the south by the Wither Hills. The gravelly soils left by the river, dry summers and cool nights created favourable conditions for vines, and in 1973 the region’s first large-scale commercial vineyards were planted there.

In a few decades Marlborough became New Zealand’s main wine region. It accounts for about three quarters of the country’s production and most exports, and is best known for sauvignon blanc. Pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot gris are also produced. To the south, behind the Wither Hills, the Awatere Valley is the newer, cooler subregion.

For visitors, the valley is a string of vineyards, many wineries open for tasting and several with restaurants. The village of Renwick in the middle of the valley concentrates bicycle rental, and the flat roads make getting around easy. Harvest usually takes place in March and April.
