About Ruakuri Cave
Ruakuri Cave is about 2 km from the village of Waitomo. According to Māori tradition, it was discovered centuries ago by a hunter attacked by wild dogs that lived at the entrance, and the name means "den of dogs." The original entrance is considered sacred and is not used by visitors.
To avoid disturbing that place, a dedicated entrance was built: a spiral ramp that descends inside a shaft to the gallery system. From there, suspended walkways follow the underground river, among limestone formations, internal waterfalls and spots with glowworms.
The guided tour lasts about two hours and is on foot, without a boat. The route is well lit and has sections accessible to wheelchairs. Ruakuri also offers adventure activities, such as underground rafting in inflatable boats and abseiling, sold by local operators.
Tickets can be bought separately or combined with the other caves; check the timetable.
