About Waikato Museum

The Waikato Museum (Te Whare Taonga o Waikato) is in central Hamilton, in a building that terraces down to the bank of the Waikato River. It brings together art, history, science and the region's Māori collections across several galleries.

The central piece is Te Winika, a war canoe (waka taua) from the early 19th century, carved from a tōtara trunk and connected to the Waikato-Tainui tribe. The canoe has its own gallery, with a view over the river it used to navigate. Other rooms tell the story of the valley's tribes, the Waikato War in the 19th century and the city's development.

The museum also has galleries of contemporary New Zealand art and temporary exhibitions that change throughout the year, plus an interactive science area aimed at families.

Entry to the permanent galleries is usually free; some temporary exhibitions charge an admission fee. Check before you go.
