About Hamilton Gardens
Hamilton Gardens lie on the east bank of the Waikato River, about 2 km from Hamilton city centre. The park brings together dozens of gardens, each designed to show a style, a period or a concept from the history of gardens around the world.
The most visited group is the Enclosed Gardens, gardens walled and fenced in. These include the Italian Renaissance Garden, with fountains and symmetrical beds; the Chinese Scholar's Garden, with pavilions and a lake; the Japanese Contemplation Garden; the Indian Char Bagh Garden, divided by channels; the Tudor Garden; the Surrealist Garden, with giant objects; and Te Parapara, a Māori traditional cultivation garden.
Around the enclosed gardens there are open areas with rose gardens, native plants, a lake and trails that descend to the river. Panels in each garden explain the origin of the style and the plants used.
Visitors from outside Hamilton pay to enter the Enclosed Gardens; the open areas are free. Check the current price table. Guided tours run at some times.
