About Taiaroa Head (Royal Albatross Centre)
Taiaroa Head (Pukekura) is the tip of the Otago Peninsula, at the entrance to Otago Harbour, about 33 km from central Dunedin. It is home to the only mainland-nesting northern royal albatross colony. The first egg was found in 1919 and the first chick flew in 1938; today the colony has more than one hundred birds, with wingspans exceeding 3 meters.
The bird area is a controlled-access reserve. The Royal Albatross Centre, run by a local trust, has exhibits about the albatrosses and runs guided tours to an observatory from which you can see the nests and, when it’s windy, the birds gliding over the headland. The tour may include Fort Taiaroa, with an Armstrong “disappearing” gun installed in 1886 when a Russian invasion was feared.
On Pilots Beach, just below, is the largest remaining colony of blue penguins on the peninsula, with organised viewing at dusk when the birds return from the sea. New Zealand fur seals often rest on the rocks of the point.
