About Dunedin Botanic Garden
The Dunedin Botanic Garden was established in 1863 and is one of New Zealand’s oldest botanic gardens. It occupies the slope between the Water of Leith valley and Signal Hill, north of the centre, split into a lower flat section and an upper hillside area.
The lower section contains flower beds, the rose garden and the winter conservatory, in Edwardian style, with tropical plants and cacti. The upper section holds one of the country’s best‑known rhododendron and azalea collections, which usually bloom between September and November, plus a native plant area and forest walking trails.
At the top, the aviary houses native and overseas birds, such as parrots and kākā. The garden is used by locals for walks and picnics, and is close to the university campus and Baldwin Street.
