About Baldwin Street
Baldwin Street is a short residential street of about 350 metres in North East Valley, roughly 3.5 km from Dunedin city centre. It climbs the flank of Signal Hill, from 30 to 100 metres above sea level, and on the steepest section, about 70 metres from the top, it reaches a gradient of about 35%.
In 1987 Guinness recognised Baldwin Street as the world’s steepest street. In 2019 the title went to a street in Harlech, Wales, but in 2020, after an appeal, Guinness revised the measurement method (measuring along the central axis of the street) and returned the title to Dunedin.
The walk up is short and tiring; at the top there is a bench and a plaque with the certificate. As people live on the street, visitors should respect residents: no loud noise, don’t block driveways and don’t attempt to go down on skates, bikes or carts.
