About Christchurch Botanic Gardens
The Christchurch Botanic Gardens were established in 1863 and cover 21 hectares within Hagley Park, west of the centre, on a bend of the Avon River. They include trees planted in the 19th century, open lawns and collections arranged by theme, from native plants to species from other continents.
The Cuningham House glasshouse, built in 1923 and opened in 1924, is a listed building that houses tropical plants. The central rose garden has 104 beds of climbers, hybrid teas and other varieties, and typically blooms from late spring into summer. The New Zealand garden, developed between 1910 and 1927, brings together native species, with mature kahikatea and beeches.
The visitor centre, opened in 2014, has an exhibition on the history of plants and gardens in Canterbury, a café and a shop. Around it, Hagley Park, one of the country’s largest urban parks, has walking and cycling paths along the river and trees that turn gold and red in autumn.
