About International Antarctic Centre (Christchurch Antarctic Centre)

Christchurch is one of the gateways to Antarctica: flights for the Antarctic programs of New Zealand, the United States and Italy depart from the city airport, and their bases are on a campus beside the runway. The International Antarctic Centre, open to the public since 1992 on that campus, shows what life and research are like on the frozen continent.

The visit includes a room that simulates an Antarctic storm, with strong wind and temperatures below zero for a few minutes (the center lends coats), exhibits on Antarctica’s geography, wildlife and expeditions, and an area with little blue penguins, the smallest penguin species, housing rescued birds that cannot return to the wild.

Outside, a ride in a Hägglunds, an over‑snow tracked vehicle used in Antarctica, follows a circuit with climbs, descents and water. The visit is well organized for families and pairs well with arrival or departure at the nearby airport.
