About Akaroa Museum

The Akaroa Museum opened in 1964 on Rue Lavaud and tells the story of the village and the Banks Peninsula: the Ngāi Tahu Māori peoples, the arrival of French settlers in 1840, the dispute with Britain over sovereignty, and the community's life in the following decades.

The museum brings together several historic buildings. The main building houses the peninsula exhibitions. Beside it are the old courthouse, from 1878, and the Langlois-Éteveneaux house from the 1840s, one of the region's oldest buildings, with period furniture and objects.

The old customs house, from the 1850s, is on Rue Balguerie, near the bay edge. Together, the buildings help explain why the village, so far from France, still has streets with French names.
