About Akaroa Lighthouse
Akaroa Lighthouse was built in 1880 on a promontory at the harbour entrance, the Akaroa Heads, 82 metres above sea level, and guided ships into the bay for almost a century. When it was replaced by an automatic light, the community decided to save it.
In 1980 the lighthouse was dismantled and moved in sections to Cemetery Point, at the southern tip of Akaroa village, where it was reassembled beside the water. The white wooden tower became one of the village's postcards.
The path there follows the bay edge from the centre, with views over the harbour and the hills across the water. On some days the interior is open to visitors, with volunteers who tell the lighthouse's story; check ahead.
