About Omarama Clay Cliffs

The Omarama clay cliffs (Clay Cliffs), also called Paritea, are a set of walls, towers and gullies of gravel and clay in the Ahuriri River valley near the village of Omarama. They are layers of gravel, sand and silt from ancient rivers, uplifted and tilted by the active Ostler Fault, which rain and wind have carved into pinnacles and narrow walls. The cliffs are part of the UNESCO Waitaki Whitestone Global Geopark.

A short trail leaves the car park and enters the gullies, among formations that reach tens of metres high. The pale clay changes colour with the light of day, and the contrast with the plateau sky attracts photographers.

The cliffs are on private farmland, and access is via Quailburn Road, which leaves Highway 8 north of Omarama, then along Henburn Road, a gravel track that can become poor after rain. The landowner charges a per-vehicle fee paid into a box at the gate. There are no facilities beyond the car park.
