About Lake Tekapo
Lake Tekapo occupies a valley carved by glaciers in the northern Mackenzie Plateau. It receives water from rivers flowing down from the Southern Alps, carrying a very fine rock powder, glacial flour, which stays suspended and gives the lake a milky blue color that changes with the light and the clouds.
The village sits at the southern tip of the lake, where the water exits to the hydroelectric canal of the Waitaki valley. A trail follows the shore from the village, passing the Church of the Good Shepherd and pebble beaches. In late spring and early summer, flowering lupins often color the shores purple, pink and yellow; these are plants introduced from elsewhere that have spread through the area.
The water is very cold, even in summer, which limits swimming. Kayaks and small boats are used on calm days. For warm-water relaxation, the Tekapo thermal pools at the foot of Mount John have heated pools with views over the lake.
