About Hooker Valley Track
The Hooker Valley Track is the most sought-after walk in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. It starts at the White Horse Hill camp, near the village, and follows about 5 km along the valley, with a total climb of roughly 100 meters, to Hooker Lake, formed by the retreat of the glacier of the same name.
Near the start, the alpine memorial commemorates climbers who died in the park and overlooks Mueller Glacier’s lake. The track skirts the moraine of that lake and crosses the Hooker River via three wooden suspension bridges that sway in the wind. In the second half of the route, Aoraki often appears at the valley’s end when the weather allows.
At the end, the Hooker Lake viewpoint is the closest point on the track to the mountain, with the glacier face across the lake and, in summer, floating icebergs. A short path descends to the shore. Return follows the same route.
