About Museo de las Momias de Guanajuato
The Mummy Museum is next to Guanajuato’s municipal cemetery. It displays bodies that were naturally mummified in the cemetery due to the soil and dry climate, and that were exhumed beginning in 1865 when families stopped paying the burial fees.
The exhibition includes dozens of mummies in display cases, with clothing and objects, and themed rooms. It is one of the most visited museums in Mexico, and the subject appears in films and in the city's popular culture.
The collection can be disturbing to children and sensitive visitors. The museum has long opening hours and often has a queue on weekends.
The cemetery next door is still the city’s cemetery, and the surrounding streets have candy and souvenir shops with the theme.
