The city
Guanajuato is the capital of the state of the same name, in a narrow gorge between mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. It grew from silver mines in the 16th century and preserves baroque churches, the Teatro Juárez, small plazas, alleys like the Callejón del Beso and streets that run in tunnels beneath the city. It is a university city and hosts the Festival Internacional Cervantino in October.
