About Monumento al Pípila
The Pípila monument is a pink stone statue about 28 meters tall, erected in 1939 on San Miguel hill above downtown Guanajuato. It represents the miner who, according to tradition, set fire to the door of the Alhóndiga in 1810, holding a torch in his hand.
The viewpoint around the statue offers the city's most famous view: the narrow valley with colorful houses on the slopes, church domes, the yellow basilica and the Teatro Juárez.
To ascend, there is a funicular that leaves from behind the Teatro Juárez and takes about a minute, or stairs and alleys that take about 20 minutes. Inside the statue, a staircase leads to a smaller lookout.
At night, the view of the city lights is equally popular.
