About Callejón del Beso
The Callejón del Beso is a stepped alley in the Cerro del Gallo neighborhood, a few blocks from downtown Guanajuato. In one stretch, the balconies of two houses are only about 68 centimeters apart.
According to legend, a young woman from a wealthy family, Ana, and a poor miner, Carlos, met in secret and kissed from balcony to balcony, until they were discovered by her father, with a tragic end for the couple.
Tradition holds that couples who kiss on the third stair will have years of happiness, and the alley often has a queue for photos. Locals tell the legend to visitors for a few coins, and the story is also part of the callejoneadas.
The balconies belong to private homes, and one of them houses a souvenir shop. The alley continues up the hill among colorful houses.
