About Basílica Colegiata de Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato
The Basilica of Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato stands on the Plaza de la Paz in the center, with a yellow facade and a tall dome. Built between 1671 and 1696 in the baroque style, the basilica is the city’s main church.
On the altar is the image of the patroness, Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato, a wooden sculpture that, according to tradition, was carved in Granada and donated to the city by King Philip II in the 16th century, in gratitude for the silver sent to Spain.
The interior features neoclassical altars and silver chandeliers. The Plaza de la Paz in front is surrounded by mansions of mining families, some now occupied by public offices.
From the basilica’s forecourt you can watch the activity in the square, and the route continues to the Jardín de la Unión and the University.
