About Miradores del Cañón del Sumidero
Parque Nacional Cañón del Sumidero protects a gorge carved by the Grijalva River between the mountains north of Tuxtla Gutiérrez. The canyon is about 13 km long, and the limestone walls reach roughly a thousand meters above the river.
A scenic road leaves Tuxtla and climbs along the canyon rim for about 20 km, with five viewpoints. The best known are La Ceiba, Los Chiapa and El Roblar, from where you can see the river far below, the bends of the gorge and the boats that look like white dots on the water.
According to tradition, the Chiapas people of the region preferred to throw themselves from the canyon heights rather than surrender to the Spaniards in the 16th century. On the slopes live monkeys, iguanas and many birds, such as vultures and hawks.
The viewpoints are complemented by a boat trip that shows the canyon from below, departing from Chiapa de Corzo.
