About Catedral de San Cristóbal
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption sits on the north side of San Cristóbal de las Casas' main square. It was begun in the 16th century and rebuilt several times after earthquakes; the current baroque façade dates to the 18th century.
What stands out most is the color: the façade is painted a vivid yellow with details in red, white and black, and floral and relief figures. The interior houses gilded altarpieces and colonial paintings.
Beside it is the small 17th-century church of San Nicolás, one of the few in the town that preserves its original construction. In the square in front, called Plaza 31 de Marzo, are the bandstand, the old Town Hall and the arcades with cafés.
On the churchyard in front of the façade vendors and musicians often gather, and the square is the town's meeting point.
