The city
San Cristóbal de las Casas is a colonial town in the mountains of Chiapas, at about 2,200 meters altitude, founded by the Spaniards in 1528. It has cobblestone streets, low brightly colored houses, the yellow cathedral and the baroque temple of Santo Domingo, with the indigenous craft market around it. Promenades such as the Real de Guadalupe concentrate cafés and restaurants. It is the base for Tsotsil villages, like Chamula.
