About Museo Frida Kahlo (Casa Azul)

La Casa Azul is the family home of Frida Kahlo in the Coyoacán neighborhood, in the south of the city. Frida was born there in 1907, lived much of her life with Diego Rivera and died upstairs on July 13, 1954. Rivera donated the house to the country, and it opened as a museum in 1958.

The house preserves the studio, with the easel and paints, the kitchen decorated with ceramics, the bedroom with the bed where Frida painted while lying down, and the couple’s collections of folk art and pre-Hispanic pieces. There are works by Frida and by Rivera and a permanent exhibition with the tehuana dresses and the orthopedic corsets she used to wear.

The courtyard, with cobalt-blue walls, plants and a small pyramid assembled by Rivera, is the most photographed area. The visit follows a one-way route through the rooms.

It is one of the city’s most sought-after museums, and entry is by timed ticket. The ticket usually includes a visit to the Museo Anahuacalli, created by Rivera in the same southern part of the city.
