About Coyoacán
Coyoacán was a separate village until the 20th century and still feels like a small town. Hernán Cortés established the first government there after the conquest of Tenochtitlan, and the cobblestone streets with colorful houses and large trees attracted artists and intellectuals in the 20th century, such as Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Leon Trotsky.
The center has two adjacent plazas: Jardín Centenario, with the coyote fountain that gives the neighborhood its name, and Plaza Hidalgo, with the 16th-century church of San Juan Bautista and the Casa de Cortés, the former municipal seat. On weekends the plazas fill with families, street performers and craft stalls.
The Coyoacán market, a few blocks away, is known for its tostadas and juices. Nearby are Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul, the Leon Trotsky House Museum, where he was murdered in 1940, and Francisco Sosa street, one of the city's oldest.
Coyoacán pairs well with a morning visit to the Casa Azul and lunch at the market. The neighboring barrio of San Ángel hosts the Bazar Sábado art market on Saturdays.
