About Casa Luis Barragán
The Casa-Estudio Luis Barragán, in the Tacubaya neighborhood, was the house where architect Luis Barragán lived from 1948 until his death in 1988. From the outside it is a simple concrete facade, almost without windows to the street; inside it is one of the best-known examples of Mexican modern architecture.
Barragán, winner of the 1980 Pritzker Prize, worked with smooth walls painted pink, yellow and orange, windows that frame the garden, staircases without handrails and light entering through high openings. The house preserves the furniture, books, art collection and the rooftop terrace, enclosed by colorful walls that only allow the sky to be seen.
UNESCO inscribed the house as a World Heritage Site in 2004. Visits are always guided, in small groups and by prior reservation, and photographing the interior usually requires a separate permit.
Near the house is Casa Gilardi, another work by Barragán with a pool with colored walls; it is also visited only by reservation.
