About Hohllay
The Hohllay, or Huel Lee, lies near Berdorf on the Mullerthal plateau, about 6 km from Echternach. It is a large cavity in the sandstone, opened by human activity: for centuries locals quarried millstones here, cutting them as discs directly from the rock, and the circular marks of that work are still visible on the walls and ceiling.
The result is a kind of stone hall, open to the forest, tall and cool, which sometimes hosts concerts. Around it the trail passes other typical regional formations such as cliffs, loose blocks and narrow clefts.
The Hohllay is on circuit 1 of the Mullerthal Trail, which links Echternach to Berdorf and passes some of the Mullerthal's best-known rock features. From Berdorf village centre it is about a 20-minute walk.
Nearby there is also an open-air amphitheatre and walls used for sport climbing. The trail surface is sand and roots, with steps in some sections.
