About Castello Brown

Castello Brown, formerly called Fortezza di San Giorgio, sits above the harbor of Portofino. Excavations found traces of a Roman-era watchtower. The first records of the current construction date from 1425, and between 1554 and 1557 the Republic of Gênova enlarged the fortress to defend the harbor against pirates.

In 1867, the British consul in Gênova, Montague Yeats Brown, bought the castle, which then took the family name. He turned it into a residence: the towers were raised and the old parade ground became a hanging garden.

The writer Elizabeth von Arnim stayed at the castle, and the stay inspired the novel The Enchanted April (1922). The municipality of Portofino has owned the castle since 1961 and uses the rooms for exhibitions.

From the terraces and the garden you can see the village, the harbor and the golfo do Tigullio.
