About Piazza De Ferrari

Piazza De Ferrari is Genoa’s central square and the city’s meeting point. The name honors Raffaele De Ferrari, Duke of Galliera, who donated a large sum for the expansion of the port in the 19th century. In the centre stands the bronze fountain inaugurated in 1936.

Around it are some of the city’s most important buildings. The Teatro Carlo Felice, Genoa’s opera house, opened in 1828, was destroyed by bombing in World War II and rebuilt. Beside it is the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti. The Palazzo della Nuova Borsa, from 1912, is an example of the liberty style, the Italian Art Nouveau.

One side of the square is the lateral façade of the Palazzo Ducale, the seat of the doges of the Republic of Genoa from the 14th century. Today the palace is a cultural centre with temporary exhibitions, events and the Grimaldina tower; the main entrance is on the nearby Piazza Matteotti.

From the square depart Via XX Settembre, a shopping street with arcades, and the alleys that descend to the historic centre. A few steps away is the Porta Soprana, a gate of the old medieval walls.
