About Lanterna di Genova
The Lanterna is the harbor lighthouse of Genoa and the city’s most important symbol. It stands on the rock of San Benigno, at the western entrance to the port. There has been a lighthouse at this point since the Middle Ages; the current tower was rebuilt in 1543 and is about 77 meters tall.
Visitor access is via a roughly 800-meter pedestrian walk along the harbor, with panels about the lighthouse’s history. At the end of the path, a park surrounds the tower’s base.
In the old fortifications is the Museo della Lanterna, with lenses, mechanisms, and models related to navigation and lighthouses. With an additional ticket, visitors climb 172 steps to the first panoramic terrace, which offers views of the port and the city.
The Lanterna is open only on some days of the week and closes in strong bad weather, so visits need to be planned.
