About Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta

The Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta stands on the tip of Camogli's harbor, on the so-called Isola, a former rocky islet now connected to the village. It is reached by a staircase that climbs from the harbor.

The façade is sober, but the interior is baroque, with three naves, gilded stuccoes, colored marbles, crystal chandeliers and frescoes on the vaults. In the side chapels there are works by painters of the Genoese school, such as Francesco Semino and Nicolò Barabino, and the high altar is by Andrea Casareggio.

Next to it is the Castello della Dragonara, a 13th-century medieval fortress built to defend the village from pirate attacks. The name recalls its exposed position to storms. Today the castle hosts exhibitions and events and has a terrace overlooking the sea.

From the tip of the Isola you can see the row of tall houses of Camogli and the Golfo Paradiso. Camogli had a large merchant fleet in the 19th century, and the town keeps that maritime memory in the houses of the former captains.
