Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
Check before buying. From Vigo it's about 30 minutes by car on the A-55 motorway, and there are frequent buses. From Valença, in Portugal, cross the international bridge on foot in about 20 minutes. Tui has a train station with limited schedules, linked to Vigo and Guillarei. Confirm times beforehand.
How many days
Half a day is enough for the cathedral and the old town. A full day lets you include Valença on the other side of the bridge, or go up to Monte Aloia. For those starting the Caminho de Santiago, one night before the first stage is usually enough.
When to go
From May to September the days are long and drier. April and May, and September and October, are the months most popular with pilgrims on the Caminho Português. From November to March it rains frequently in the Baixo Minho.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
You don't need a car for the old town, the cathedral and Valença, which are done on foot. A car helps for Monte Aloia, about 6 km from the center, and for exploring the Rías Baixas.
