About Necròpolis del Puig des Molins
The Necròpolis del Puig des Molins occupies a hill west of Dalt Vila, the hill of the windmills, where windmills used to turn. It was the cemetery of the city founded by the Phoenicians in the 7th century BC and later used by the Carthaginians and the Romans. It is estimated that there are between 3,000 and 4,000 tombs on the slope, one of the best-preserved Punic necropolises in the Mediterranean.
The most common tombs are hypogea: underground chambers cut into the rock, reached by vertical shafts, where sarcophagi with the dead and objects for the afterlife were placed. Part of the hill, covered with olive trees, can be walked along paths, and one of the hypogea is open to visitors.
The monographic museum next door displays the items found in the excavations: amulets, painted ostrich eggs, jewelry, masks and terracotta figures, including the image of the goddess Tanit, protector of the Punic city.
The necropolis has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999.
