About Platja Gran de Tossa de Mar
Platja Gran, also called sa Platja, is the beach in the center of Tossa de Mar, on the bay of Tossa. To the west it ends at the cabo de Tossa, where the walls of the Vila Vella stand; to the east, a stretch of rocks leads to the neighboring beach Mar Menuda.
Facing east, it is 381 meters long and about 74 meters wide on average. The sand is coarse and pinkish in color, and the entry into the sea slopes: the water becomes deep a few steps from the shore. In the southern corner, called es Racó, the riera de Tossa flows out.
The silhouette of the cape with the wall behind the beach is one of the most photographed images of the Costa Brava. The seafront promenade around it has restaurants, bars and cafés.
In season there are showers, toilets, a lifeguard post, a yacht club and a diving center. Glass-bottom boat trips along the coast also depart from here. Outside summer the beach is quiet and good for walking.
Before you go
Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
An afternoon, for those who want the beach; 20 minutes if just for the view of the walls.
Best time
The bathing season generally runs from June to September. In July and August, arrive early to find a spot on the sand. The morning sun lights the walls well for photos.
How to get there
On foot, from the center of Tossa. From the bus station it’s about a 10-minute walk downhill toward the sea.
Tip
The coarse sand and the seabed that deepens quickly require attention with children and with those who are not strong swimmers. Bring water shoes if you have sensitive feet. Glass-bottom boat trips depend on the weather and the season.
