Confirm before you buy. From Barcelona, the high-speed train stops at Figueres-Vilafant station, about 2 km from the center, with a shuttle bus. The slower regional R11 train stops at Figueres station in the center. By car, the AP-7 motorway runs beside the city.

How many days

One day is enough for the Teatre-Museu Dalí, the Rambla and the Castell de Sant Ferran. To include Dalí's house in Portlligat and the castle of Púbol, allow at least one more day: both are about 40 km from Figueres, in opposite directions, and they don't fit comfortably in the same day as the museum.

When to go

Spring (April to June) and September usually have pleasant weather. In July and August the average exceeds 22 °C and the museum gets crowded. From November to March the tramuntana blows stronger — a cold, dry north wind.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

For Figueres, no: the train arrives and the center is walkable. For Portlligat there are buses to Cadaqués, but the day becomes tight. Púbol has no public transport to the door; without a car, the route is train to Flaçà and taxi. By car, the three Dalí museums fit into two days.

Suggested itinerary

An order that works

Built with the places on this page. No rush: it's paced so you have time to see them.

One day in Figueres
  1. Morning
    Teatre-Museu Dalí

Arrive at opening with your ticket already purchased. Walk through the courtyard of the old theatre, the Mae West room and the Palau del Vent, and finish in the Dalí·Joies jewelry rooms, which are part of the same route.

  2. Afternoon
    Castell de Sant Ferran

Walk up or take a taxi to the Castell de Sant Ferran and do the self-guided visit through the parade ground and the stables. If there's availability, include the boat trip in the cisterns.

  3. Late afternoon
    Rambla and Museu del Joguet

Go down to the Rambla, the city's main promenade, and visit the Museu del Joguet de Catalunya, which houses toys by Dalí and Joan Miró.

  4. Evening
    Dinner in the center

Dine on the streets around the Rambla. The Catalan cuisine of the Empordà blends sea and mountain. If you're returning to Barcelona, check the time of the last train before sitting down.

Day 2

    Return to Girona or Figueres

From Púbol, Girona is closer than Figueres. Stay the night there or return to Figueres to catch the train.

Check before you go. Opening hours and days change, and places may close for renovations, holidays or events. This itinerary is a suggestion from Cidade Turismo, not a commitment: plan yours by checking directly with each place you intend to visit.

Frequently asked questions

Can you go to Figueres as a day trip from Barcelona?

Yes. The high-speed train usually takes less than an hour between Barcelona and Figueres-Vilafant station. In one day you can fit the Teatre-Museu Dalí and the Castell de Sant Ferran. Buy the museum ticket in advance and check the time of the last train back.

What's the difference between Figueres-Vilafant and Figueres stations?

Figueres-Vilafant is the high-speed line station, about 2 km from the centre, linked to the city by bus. Figueres station, in the centre, receives the regional R11 train, which comes from Barcelona-Sants via Girona. Opposite it is the bus station.

Can you see all three Dalí museums in one day?

It is not recommended. The foundation that runs the museums itself advises at least two days, because Portlligat and Púbol are about 40 km from Figueres, each in opposite directions. Portlligat's house requires a reservation with day and time.

What language is spoken in Figueres?

Catalan and Spanish. The names on signs appear in Catalan: Figueres, not Figueras, which is the Spanish form. At the Dalí museums there is information in several languages.

What is the tramuntana?

It's the north wind, cold and dry, typical of the Empordà. It blows year-round, stronger from November to March. On days of strong tramuntana, bring a jacket even if it's sunny.
