Gonçalves – MG Destination Serra da Mantiqueira about 460 km from Belo Horizonte

How to get there

From São Paulo it is about 190 km via the Fernão Dias to Cambuí and then 22 km on a dirt road, or about 210 km entirely on paved roads via Santo Antônio do Pinhal and São Bento do Sapucaí, from which Gonçalves is 20 km along the MG-173. From Belo Horizonte, about 460 km via the Fernão Dias, exiting at Pouso Alegre and passing through Paraisópolis.

How many days

Two days allow for one trail, such as Pedra Chanfrada or Pedra do Forno, and two or three waterfalls, like Cachoeira do Simão and Cachoeira dos Henriques. With three or four days you can do both hikes and visit the waterfalls closest to the center, such as Sete Quedas.

When to go

From April to September it rains less, days are usually dry and nights are cold, with frost on some winter mornings. From November to March the waterfalls usually have more water and the trails become more slippery. July and long holiday weekends are the busiest periods.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

Yes. The waterfalls and trails are in the rural neighborhoods, up to 10 km from the center, on dirt roads. In the rainy season some ascents require caution. The town does not have transport to the attractions.
