About Guimarães Rosa House Museum

The Museu Casa Guimarães Rosa occupies the house where João Guimarães Rosa was born on June 27, 1908, in the center of Cordisburgo. Rosa is the author of Grande Sertão: Veredas and Sagarana, and many of his stories take place in the sertão of Minas that begins in this region. After passing through several owners, the house was renovated and opened as a museum in 1974.

The house stands on a corner facing the railway line that cuts through the town. In the front room the shop that the writer's father ran there until 1923 has been recreated, where books and souvenirs are now sold. The other rooms hold personal items, photographs, documents and first editions related to the author.

Young people from the town greet visitors, tell stories about Rosa’s life and recite passages from his books, as part of a mediation program that is part of the visit. The museum is linked to the government of Minas Gerais and is usually the center of the cultural activities dedicated to the writer in Cordisburgo.
