Delfinópolis – MG Destination Nascentes das Gerais e Canastra about 420 km from Belo Horizonte

How to get there

It is about 420 km from Belo Horizonte, about 75 km from Passos and about 90 km from Franca, São Paulo. The waterfalls are in the rural area, accessed via dirt roads leaving from town; those in the Vale da Gurita are more than 30 km away. Without a car, there are local drivers and agencies that run tours.

How many days

Three days allow visiting the Complexo do Claro, the Cachoeira do Ouro and another set of waterfalls in the Vale da Gurita or Serra Preta. With five days you can include the more distant valleys, such as Babilônia, and the scenic road Caminho do Céu.

When to go

Between April and October the dry season makes rural roads more passable. From November to March the waterfalls usually have more water, but there are river crossings and muddy sections that can become difficult. Trails in canyons are recommended only in the dry season.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

Yes. The waterfalls are spread across the rural area, some more than 30 km from town, and certain roads require a high-clearance vehicle or 4x4, with river crossings in the Vale da Gurita. Those who don't drive can hire tours with local drivers.

Frequently asked questions

How many waterfalls does Delfinópolis have?

The city hall cites more than 150 waterfalls in the municipality, spread across mountains and valleys such as Serra Preta, Vale da Gurita and Babilônia. Many are grouped in complexes within farms, with trails and visitor facilities.

Are the waterfalls in Delfinópolis paid?

Most are on private properties, which charge an entrance fee to maintain trails, parking and restrooms. Rates vary from place to place; check before you go.

Do you need a 4x4 in Delfinópolis?

For the waterfalls near town, such as the Complexo do Claro, no. For the Vale da Gurita and the more distant valleys, there are dirt, mountain and river-crossing sections where a high-clearance vehicle or 4x4 helps, especially in the rainy season.

Is Delfinópolis in the Serra da Canastra?

Yes. The municipality is on the southern side of the Serra da Canastra and part of its territory lies within the Serra da Canastra National Park. Most of the visited waterfalls, however, are outside the park, on farms.

What is the best time to go to Delfinópolis?

From April to October, when dirt roads are firmer. From November to March the waterfalls usually have more water, but rain makes access more difficult and can close some trails.
