About Church of São Thomé (Igreja Matriz de São Thomé)
The Igreja Matriz de São Thomé occupies the town's main square, Praça Barão de Alfenas, next to the grotto that gave rise to the settlement. A chapel was erected on the site around 1770 after the discovery of the image of São Tomé, and construction of the current mother church began in 1785.
Like the old houses and the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário, the mother church is built of São Tomé stone, the mountain quartzite, laid in irregular overlapping slabs without mortar. The historic center and the mother church complex are listed by the Instituto Estadual do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico de Minas Gerais (IEPHA).
Inside, the paintings with biblical scenes are attributed to Joaquim José da Natividade, considered a disciple of Aleijadinho. The church remains in use by the parish, with masses and religious festivals throughout the year.
