About Church of Our Lady of Pleasures (Mother Church)
The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres is the oldest church in Milho Verde. There is no record of its construction date, but it is known that Chica da Silva, born in the village, was baptized around 1734 in the Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres, which gave rise to the matriz. Years later, Chica lived in Arraial do Tijuco, today’s Diamantina, with diamond contractor João Fernandes de Oliveira.
The church stands on elevated ground, with a wooden calvary in front, installed in 1969 in place of the previous one. According to the State Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage of Minas Gerais (Iepha-MG), the temple preserves almost intact its original lines and interior: floor with graves, confessionals linked to the nave balustrade, pulpits with visible stairs and the baptismal font.
State listing was approved in 1980 and includes the paintings, woodcarving, images and church furnishings. It is the center of the village’s religious festivals.
