About Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary
The Capela de Nossa Senhora do Rosário sits atop a hill, at the highest point of Milho Verde, next to the village cemetery. It is a small building with clay walls and a wooden structure, whitewashed, with painted doors and windows and a two-sloped roof. The exact date of construction is unknown; tourism sources mention it was built by enslaved people between the 18th and 19th centuries.
The site became known outside Minas Gerais after appearing on the cover of Milton Nascimento’s album Caçador de Mim. The image of the isolated chapel on the hill, with sky and mountains around it, became a symbol of the village.
The path to it is short and climbs along dirt streets and an open grass area. From the top you can see the houses of Milho Verde, the rupestrian fields of the Serra do Espinhaço and, in the distance, the Estrada Real route to São Gonçalo do Rio das Pedras.
