The city

What to expect from Lavras Novas.

Lavras Novas is a district of Ouro Preto about 17 km from the municipal seat, up on the highlands, on the far side of Parque Estadual do Itacolomi. The village was founded with the gold rush in the early 18th century, remained isolated for a long time and only got electricity around 1970. Low, colorful houses cluster around the Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres, from 1762, and the surroundings have waterfalls and viewpoints over the mountains.
